    Hygiene

If there’s one thing we focus on here at Ocean Dental, it is good oral hygiene. Good oral hygiene really is the biggest pillar of dental health. Prevention is always better than treatment, and the best way to prevent any oral issues is to look after your teeth. That means brushing and flossing properly and regularly.

We recommend brushing your teeth daily with an electric toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, brushing in gentle circular motions. Flossing regularly and using mouthwash is also an excellent way to maintain hygiene. Prevent a buildup of plaque from trapped food by chewing gum after eating.

There are also plenty of bad habits you can avoid to maintain good oral hygiene. Smoking, drinking fizzy sugary drinks and red wine and eating a lot of sugary food can all negatively affect your oral health. Sugar and tobacco stains your teeth, weakening the enamel and leaving you susceptible to gum disease and ultimately even mouth cancer.

We are firm believers that a patient’s care is in their hands most of the time, and we will advise and encourage healthy daily habits as much as possible. But we can help too. With every treatment and every appointment your dentist will be on hand to give you advice and answer any questions you might have about dental hygiene. But we also have an in-house team of dedicated hygienists who can use specialist equipment to clean away anything that might be difficult for you to do at home.

It’s much more involved than a dentist’s scale and polish. A hygiene appointment is a comprehensive clean of your teeth and gums, sweeping away any buildup of plaque and bacteria that might have the potential to cause trouble later on.

This cleaning treats gum disease as well as the causes of it, helps treat and prevent bad breath, reduce discomfort and pain and even prevent illnesses such as hypertension and heart disease. If you really want to keep on top of everything we recommend you schedule visits at least once every six months.

People with diabetes, osteoporosis and hypertension can be at a greater risk of damage to teeth than most, but oral health is important for everyone. A hygiene appointment will leave you fresh and clean and feeling confident in yourself, as well as removing any potential health hazards.
