Dentistry Abroad

As a result of long waiting lists and perceived high dentistry costs, the trend of seeking restorative and cosmetic dental care in foreign destinations has been on the rise in the UK. The considered advantages to going abroad for dental treatment include:

  • Significant price savings compared with UK costs
  • Treatment in advanced facilities
  • The prospect of a vacation in a foreign country

The popular treatments are usually the ones that are complex and sought include dental implants, crowns and bridges and cosmetic dental treatments. However, there are a number of issues and risks that one should consider before going abroad:

Is Dentistry Abroad safe?

Many people are rightly worried about the safety aspect of going abroad for their dental treatments. It is not always easy to confirm the quality and standard of dentists abroad, with UK qualified dentists assurance can be obtained from the General Dental Council (GDC) and other organisations the dentist may be affiliated with. Your own dentist may be able to provide recommendations or give you assistance in selecting an alternative dentist for complex treatment.

Dealing with unexpected dental problems

The continuity of care is a huge issue with having dental treatment abroad. Whilst you would hope that the dentist completes the treatment without any post treatment issues on the odd occasion this does happen. What do you do if you return home and have post-treatment problems? It may not be possible, cost effective or too time consuming to deal with such problems. If you are in pain you want it resolved immediately and not want to have to take a flight to get it resolved. Having treatment in the UK provides that assurance.

In the worse case scenario if the dental treatment went completely wrong you would have limited fall back if undertaken abroad whereas within the UK there is the GDC and ultimately the UK legal system.

Communication issues

Whilst there are many foreign dentists that are able to speak fluent English many do not. Having someone undertake complex dental treatment on your teeth with whom you can not communicate may cause many problems. The risk is not necessarily eliminated by having a telephone conversation as the dentist undertaking the work may be someone else.

You may also feel more vulnerable in an environment that is unfamiliar, especially if you can’t easily ask questions. Call our dental practice in Manchester where we have recommended other cosmetic dentists abroad to cut the costs of the treatment you need whether you require dental implants, fillings, lumineers you will be getting a good deal. Where we do dental bridges in Manchester at certain costs you are able to get a better deal abroad if this is something you are considering.
