There is a tendency for some parents to be under the impression that baby teeth do not need as much care as adult teeth as they will be lost anyway. It is important that your baby visits a dentist before his or her 1st birthday in order to diagnose any dental problems early. Once a child is weaned from the breast or bottle onto solid food there is a great risk of tooth decay which can effect the way the child is able to chew food. Teeth should be cleaned with a soft toothbrush or a cloth and water as soon as they appear, this should be done twice daily.

As well as ensuring oral comfort for your baby, a proper dental care routine is essential to teach your child good habits for the future. Dentists can’t stress enough the advantages of preventative care of the the teeth in order to avoid serious dental problems in the future.

Cleaning your baby’s teeth is important but so too is diet. Avoid the obvious sugary foods and drinks and stick to tooth friendly snacks such as fruit, vegetables and cheese. Baby bottles can also be the source of dental problems in children as the juice in the bottle can stay in contact with the teeth and cause cavities and tooth decay. This condition is known as “bottle mouth” and the teeth can become pitted and discoloured. Helping your child to learn to drink from a cup at an early age can significantly reduce the risk of this condition and it is important to never put them to bed with a bottle.

A fresh way of giving sufferers a way of dealing with hypersensitivity in teeth appears to have been found.
A brand new chemical formula that can help stop bacteria from decaying one’s teeth in addition to treating hypersensitivity in the teeth has been discovered.

Detailed research which took place at NYU demonstrated that zinc ions and fluoride mixed with a matrix of calcium phosphate reverses the process of damage inflicted upon a tooth through Streptococcus mutans.

Dental Implant or Dental Bridge??

It is generally thought these days that dental implants are a much more effective method of replacing single missing teeth. In the past it was more common for single missing teeth to be replaced by a three unit bridge where the teeth on either side of the gap were required to be reduced in size and reshaped in order for the bridge to be fitted over the top. The problem with this method is the risk of the health of the surrounding gum tissue and could in the long run lead to periodontal desease if the bridge is not cleaned properly. Dental bridges must be cleaned with specialised dental cleaning equipment as opposed to dental implants which can be brushed and flossed like natural teeth.

Dental implants are titanian cylinders which are implanted into the bone and require a certain amount of healing time in order for the bone to heal around them, locking them in like an anchor. When the healing process is complete a wider post is attached to the implant and the new tooth will be attached to the second post.
