Cosmetic dentistry is becoming more and more popular in the UK and there has been a significant surge in the demand for smile makeover procedures and dental implants in teeth. Not only will cosmetic dentistry improve the appearance of teeth but can also have a significant impact on general oral health.
The dental procedure used will depend entirely on the individual needs of the patient and will require an initial consultation with the dentist to ensure that the patient’s needs are met. All procedures are clearly explained and the patient will be fully informed of time scales, expected results and how this will impact on their appearance and oral health.
There are a range of options available for people who are looking for an improved smile including dental veneers, dental crowns, dentures, dental bridges and dental implants in the jawbone to name but a few. But let’s look at these procedures, what they involve and the results they can achieve. Dental implants placed in slightly wrong areas of the mouth can cause significant problems down the line. This is an error that the professionals here at Ocean Dental are correcting time and time again after another dental implants clinic has made the initial mistake.
Firstly let’s explain dental veneers and what they are. Veneers have long been used to aesthetically improve the appearance of stained, crooked, broken or worn teeth. They are a fantastic method of transforming “ugly” teeth into straight, white attractive teeth. Dental veneers are semi translucent, wafer thin coverings made of either porcelain or composite which are permanently bonded to the teeth. Not only do they look great but it only requires two appointments from beginning to end of the procedure. They are extremely durable and natural looking although it must be pointed out that bad habits such as nail biting and chewing on hard objects can damage the new veneers but if looked after properly can last a life time.
For cracked and damaged teeth an effective procedure is to use dental crowns or “caps” as they often known. The crown sits over the entire surface of the damaged tooth in order to protect its functionality and to strengthen it. Dental crowns are made of porcelain or gold or a combination of the two. The procedure can be quite invasive as it requires significant grinding of the original tooth and therefore the dentist may suggest other procedures before considering this option. If cared for properly a crown will last approximately 10-15 years.
The use of dentures is very common amongst people who have significant tooth loss. They are made to look and function like your own teeth but can be removed unlike other tooth replacement methods. A complete denture is used for patients who have lost all of their teeth and a partial denture is available for those with only a few teeth missing. There is a wide variety of materials used in the production of dentures from acrylic resins to the latest flexible Valplast cosmetic dentures. Although dentures can be very pricey they will have a significant effect on improving your quality of life.
Dental bridges are another option when looking to solve the problem of missing teeth. A false tooth, known as a pontic, is anchored to new crowns to the teeth on either side thereby filling in the gap. Bridges can be made of porcelain, porcelain bonded to precious metal or all-metal dental bridges (gold). One of the advantages of dental bridges is that the procedure only requires 2 appointments approximately 2 weeks apart. In general a bridge will last 10-15 years if cared for properly. Your dentist will advise on how to clean your bridge to keep the teeth healthy.
Dental implants are a relatively new and contemporary alternative to dental bridges in as much as they remove the need of affecting the health of the teeth surrounding the missing tooth. A dental implant is an artificial replacement of the root portion of the tooth. The implant is made from titanium and is anchored into the jaw bone in order for a crown to be attached. Once the titanium cylinder has been implanted into the jaw there is a requirement for a certain amount of healing time for the bone to heal around the implant. By allowing this healing process to take place the bone will lock the implant into the jaw like an anchor. A second wider post will then be attached to the implant and the new tooth will be attached to this. Dental implants for missing teeth can be costly but are a great investment for the future. Book a consultation at our dental implants clinic and our dentists will advise your individual needs as well as giving you realistic expectations of time and cost. Our clinic offers payments schemes in order to make dental implants affordable to the majority of patients.
